Art, for the sake of art (Or why gary doesn't like my movies)

Listening to: Lisztomania by Phoenix

This post was 'inspired' by my friend gary, who has the absolute worst taste in movies. (he'll tell you the same thing about me :P)
Everyone knows a gary in their life. He's the guy who thinks Cop-out is a watchable movie, or the guy that just 'didn't get' that great film you were so excited about.
You see, to gary(s), films are movies and movies are just a form of entertainment. He's always getting on my case for not 'leaving my brains outside' when i enter a cinema. He makes us watch movies like 'Storm Warriors 2', which is probably - all things considered - the worst film i've seen (yeah you were right..we're never gonna let that rest).
Now here's the funny part: I actually agree with him. Not most of the time, but a surprising number of times.
It's easy to get caught up in the overrated critical acclaim and be somewhat brainwashed into believing a particular movie is great. The beauty of someone like a gary, is that he sees beyond (unintentionally) and sees the movie for what it actually is. Which is why there are times that he makes the most succient points about movies, in that they are pretentious or just plain boring (see hurt locker). And like it or not, he's right.

Which brings me to my point that there are far too many films that are artsy or eclectic just because they can. It's easy to think 'wow that was deep', when you can actually think 'that didn't make sense at all'. There are times when we could use someone to tell us something just isn't that amazing.
Of course, this ability to step back and accept a different point of view is applicable to the larger framework of life, but you don't need me to preach on about that.

But for now, here's a big thank you (not all the time!) to gary and his crappy movies. Cheers!
