listening to: Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
"hello, hello, hello, how low?"
felt the sudden urge to address something i've been thinking of.
juliano's article a few days back regarding the number of teenagers writing fantasy stories set me thinking. the urge of teenagers to escape reality is increasingly apparent. we see it in the search for a "high" when taking drugs, the way teenagers steal for the thrill of committing a crime, youth taking a liking to alchohol. this has led me to wonder:
are we going to be a generation seeking to escape reality?
it's obvious social ongoings affects a generation. an example would be the hippy movement in the 1960s, affected and misled by the era of cold wars, korean wars and world wars. i wonder if we're result of the social occurances in our era. the mtv culture, the increased sexual nature of our televisions. i wonder if we've been subconciously affected by what we've seen and heard.
we are surrounded by perfection. or so we believe. the television showcases beatiful people with beautiful homes in beautiful worlds. from mischa barton to fiona xie, perfection floods our screens every day. of course there are "less perfect" people, but they are made a joke of and most of the time, we are laughing at them, rather than with them. anyway, this perfection may have convinced us that reality contains no flaws. hence, when we go through hardships, we question the reality of the reality we live in.
the things we see may have encouraged us to believe that there is a nirvana we have yet to achieve, a state of mind yet to be found. hence, we seek this perfection, trying our best to attain a state of perfection. and we turn to cheap thrills like drugging ourselves or drowning ourselves with beer to try to reach that form.
we've been so convinced that we live in a perfect world that we begin to get confused over the reality we live in. if what they say on television is true, why am i suffering like this? we get somewhat confused over the reality we live in, the line between reality and the goggle box gets blurred and we start seeking for the highs and escapades in the shows we see.
we reject reality.
i don't know. it's just something i thought of. god bless and have a good day. btw, i updated twice today.
oh and please give me your thoughts on this. i think it's a frightening phenomenon.
